First Footing Hole (Sep 2001)

I started out late last summer by digging an exploratory footing hole, one of three new footings needed to add a center truss at the mid-point of the deck.

The very first footing I dug, I hit slag concrete dumped onto a ledge outcropping about 2 feet down (the slag and ledge extended far below the 4 foot depth requirement), so I drilled and set rebar into the existing ledge and concrete, and poured a new footing onto that. "X" marks the spot where the center of the footing was placed.
