SOUTH BEND - Tom Vogt passed away at The Sanctuary at Holy Cross on Wednesday, June 23rd, surrounded by his close friends who have enjoyed his zest for life for many years. In the end Tom accepted his illness with amazing humor, courage and faith. He was a lifelong resident of South Bend. Born on November 10, 1944, he resided for most of his life at Briarcliff Estates and most recently at the Park Jefferson Apartments. Being handicapped was not in Tom's dictionary, and his passion for life amazed friends and family. His father and mother encouraged golf at an early age and he played with great passion and skill. He has trophies and hole-in-one certificates to show for it. He played in many exhibition tournaments in the 70s for fundraising efforts for the handicapped. His photo collection of himself beside the golf icons of the era were among his treasures, with Arnold Palmer being a favorite. McDonalds on McKinley and Bobicks formerly employed Tom. Tom was a member of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for several years. He held season tickets for many years for both the men's and women's Notre Dame basketball games and followed them with great enthusiasm. Tom's most celebrated activity was frequent dinners at Doc Pierce's in Mishawaka. Many will remember Tom making rounds on his bicycle. He had a lifelong love affair on the telephone and many will miss his daily calls. Tom was pre-deceased by his parents, Harry and Olga Vogt. He leaves countless friends and close associates on the golf course at Erskine Golf Club, at church, at Logan Protective Services, and in the greater South Bend community. His longtime guardian, cousin John Webster of Orr's Island, Maine, survives him along with several cousins across the U.S. and the caring staff at Logan Center. Memorial services for Tom will be on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, 114 N. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, where visitation will also be on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka. Memorial donations may be made to Logan Protective Services, 2505 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, or to Evangel Heights United Methodist Church. The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the administration and staff at Logan Protective Services and The Sanctuary at Holy Cross. Bubb Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
