      Hi Robin,

One of my ancestors was a Purdy. Apparently comes from the French "par Dieu", that is 'by God'. The name is common to SW England, Ulster, SW Ireland, and the Canadian Maritime Provinces.

The Purdys were a distinguished Loyalist family. That is, they stayed with the British Crown during the American Revolution and later migrated to Canada. Hope this helps.

      Regards,
