Search Terms: DEGORY PRIEST
Database: The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-33
ORIGIN: Leiden, Holland
MIGRATION: 1620 on Mayflower
FIRST RESIDENCE: Plymouth
OCCUPATION: Hatter (when admitted as a citizen of Leiden) [Leiden 216].
ESTATE: In the 1623 Plymouth land division "Cudbart Cudbartsone" received six acres as a passenger on the Anne in 1623 [PCR 12:6]; four of these six shares would be for the deceased Degory Priest, his widow Sarah and his two daughters. In the 1627 Plymouth cattle division "Marra Priest" and "Sarah Priest" were the tenth and eleventh persons in the second company, just after their mother and stepfather [PCR 12:9].
BIRTH: About 1579 (aged about forty in 1619 [Dexter 630]).
DEATH: Plymouth 1 January 1620/1 [Prince 287].
MARRIAGE: Leiden 4 November 1611 [NS] "Sara Vincent, widow of Jan Vincent" [MD 7:129-30; Leiden 216]; Priest is said to be of London. She was sister of ISAAC ALLERTON and married (3) Leiden November 1621 (betrothed 25 October 1621 [NS]) GODBERT GODBERTSON [Leiden 101].
CHILDREN:
i MARY, b. say 1612; m. by about 1630 PHINEAS PRATT.
ii SARAH, b. say 1614; m. by about 1632 JOHN COOMBS.
COMMENTS: Bradford includes "Digory Priest" in his list of those on the Mayflower, and in his accounting of 1651 says that Priest "died soon after ... arrival in the general sickness," but "had his wife and children sent hither afterwards, she being Mr. Allerton's sister" [Bradford 443, 447].
In 1957 John G. Hunt published the 1582 baptism for a "Digorius Prust" in Hartland, Devonshire [NEHGR 111:320]; although there is nothing to connect this with Degory Priest of London, Leiden and Plymouth, it is a useful clue.
BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: Degory Priest and his descendants have been given full and definitive treatment in the eighth volume of the Five Generations project of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, compiled by Mrs. Charles Delmar Townsend, Robert S. Wakefield and Margaret Harris Stover, and edited by Robert S. Wakefield (Plymouth 1994).

About ScotlandsPeople
A partnership between the General Register Office for Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland, The Court of the Lord Lyon and Scotland On Line, ScotlandsPeople is the official online source of parish register, civil registration, census and wills & testaments records for Scotland.
Containing over 50 million records, the ScotlandsPeople database is one of the worlds largest resources of genealogical information and one of the largest single information resources on the Web. We provide a fully searchable index of Scottish births from 1553-1905, marriages from 1553 to 1930 and deaths from 1855 to 1955. In addition, indexed census data is available from 1851 to 1901 as well as Scottish Wills & Testaments from 1513 to 1901. To respect privacy of living people, internet access has been limited to birth records over 100 years old, marriage records over 75 years, and death records over 50 years.
From the results of an index search made on this site you may view, save and print images of many of the original documents, and order extracts of any register entries of interest. Such requests are forwarded automatically to New Register House, and the requested extracts are mailed to you (airmail in the case of overseas orders).
General Register Office for Scotland
The General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) administers the registration of events such as births, deaths, marriages, divorces and adoptions, and is responsible for the statutes relating to the formalities of marriage and conduct of civil marriage. They take the decennial census of Scotland's population and prepare and publish demographic and other statistics for central and local Government, for medical research, and for the private sector. They also make available to customers public records about individuals, and maintain for the Scottish Executive the National Health Service Central Register. GROS is headed by the Registrar General for Scotland, Duncan Macniven.
National Archive of Scotland
The National Archive of Scotland (NAS) is an Executive Agency and Associated Department of the Scottish Executive. NAS has one of the most varied collections of archives in the British Isles. It is the main archive for sources for the history of Scotland as a separate kingdom, her role in the British Isles and the links between Scotland and many other countries over the centuries. NAS holds records spanning the 12th to 21st centuries, touching on virtually every aspect of Scottish life. As well as being the repository for the public and legal records of Scotland, NAS also holds many local and private archives. It also advises Scottish government departments, institutions, businesses and private individuals on the care of their records. The Scottish Archive Network (SCAN) project was set up by NAS and a consortium of local and other archives in Scotland, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 1999 to improve access to Scottish archival resources over the Internet. The most relevant part of the project was digitising and indexing of Scottish wills and testaments 1513-1901.
Court of the Lord Lyon
On behalf of the Sovereign the Lord Lyon King of Arms exercises the Royal Prerogative to grant Arms to virtuous and well deserving persons. The Court of the Lord Lyon is a court of law, part of the Justice Department of Scottish Executive, and deals with petitions for grants of Arms. The Court holds the Registers of Arms and of Genealogies as well as other collections.

She had the cottage in Banemore down from Peggy after her husband Jerry, died. But then she went into Tralee to be with her sister, so no-one has it now. | HALLORAN, Annie (I3468)

She lived in Omaha. She came to Boston to Fr. Jackie CARROLL's ordination. Anna NEVILLE went to school with her. She was the younger child. Her sister Nellie arranged for her to come to the US to visit. But she never did return to Ireland. She often felt bad that she didn't have the chance to say a personal goodbye to her mother Johanna. Her trip to the US was a rather frightening experience for a young girl. The conditions on the boat were not the best, and she had no one to turn to. When she arrived at Ellis Island they would not let her move on to Omaha where her sponsors were as she did not have the required amount of money. They held her there for a few days until it was straightened out. She never forgot the experience and talked of it to her children. | CARROLL, Margaret (I780)
|
| 2786 |
She was from a small cottage on the Ballyheigue road. Her children went to Boston. | MCCROHAN, Ellie (I3754)
|
| 2787 |
She was married twice. She went back to Ireland on a visit, met Michael, and married him. He owned the Public House in Ardfert. His son Brendan owns it now. Real name was Kathryn. She is buried in the Kilmoyly Cemetery. She has the big headstone with the Blessed Virgin on top. She died of fever three years after Cathleen was born and left two little children. | MCGRATH, Catherine (I823)
|
| 2788 |
She was named after her grandmother Johanna CROWLEY. She was nicknamed Han in Ireland, and was called Anna in the US. She came out to her Aunt Kate CARROLL in Boston on August 16, 1925 when she was 23 years old. She very much wanted a new life in America, having spent about ten years out of school on the farm, working very hard to help her mother with the cooking, cleaning, and housework, as well as work around the farm. There was a night of dancing before she left for America. She went on the side car to Tralee to the train station to go to Queenstown (Cobh). Doll remembers seeing her off at the train station in Tralee. Doll remembers her mother running after the train, waving and crying. Her mother was heartbroken. Anna had on a navy outfit, with a hat and high shoes. Anna took the train to Cobh, where she took a ship to New York City, and then went on to Boston. The ship was the SS Carmania. It arrived in New York City on August 16, 1925. Anna then went up to Boston. The ship's records said that she did not have a ticket for her final destination, so she must have arranged that in New York. She lived with her Aunt Kate at 140 Summer Street in Newton Square. She worked in Newton Square as a domestic, and then met James NEVILLE at an Irish dance. | CARROLL, Johanna (I635)
|
| 2789 |
She was naturalized on June 15, 1942, certificate number 5552587. One of her witnesses was Mary K Cusick of 61 Forest Street, Roxbury, who was a neighbor. At the time Anna lived at 2 Forest Place in Roxbury. She was five foot six inches tall, fair skin and hazel eyes. She weighed 180 pounds. | CARROLL, Johanna (I635)
|
| 2790 |
She was tall, about six foot tall, and thin, and she wore long skirts. She was the youngest child. She was fun and full of life. When she did get angry she would say, "Peggy, Peg, Peg, and Johnnie, John, John, and they all met together in a fortified fort." She was very devout in her old age. She always carried her rosary. She prayed to St. Anthony. She would put a few coins in any box for St. Anthony. She was very kind to everyone, and she never had an enemy. She would read with only one eyeglass in the eyeglass frame. She was clean and neat. She worked very hard. It was hard for her to see most of her children go to America. She never saw them again. She was a great midwife. She was strong and wiry. She brought all of Anna NEVILLE's brothers and sisters, and Anna, into the world, along with many other babies. No babies ever died when she was involved. She was always reading her epistle. She prayed a lot. But she loved to dance and could dance until the end of the gathering. She smoked a clay pipe. She would ask Doll or Kit to light it, and they would smoke a little of it. She lived at Banemore as a widow. Gerald and Sheila CARROLL's house was built on the site of an old house which various relatives lived in, including her. After she died, Sally lived there until she died. She died of senile decay, according to the death certificate, although Anna said that she had a stroke (or perhaps pneumonia) on Christmas night and died five days later. She had to be watched carefully for the last several years of her life. She had been ill for one week (death certificate) and there was no doctor present. She died on a Monday evening and was waked Tuesday in the house. They took her to the church on Wednesday and buried her on Thursday. Ellen paid for the wake. One version says that she lived to be 89. | MCGRATH, Johanna (I680)
|
| 2791 |
She was the oldest child. She lived in England, but died at Kilmoyly, Ardfert. She had two sons who were teachers, a son Fr. Xavier LOVETT in Seattle, a daughter who was a nurse, another daughter, and five daughters who were nuns. Her nickname was Bob. | CARROLL, Mary (I789)
