Dear Gene,
I write to tell you that my beloved sister, Sr. Aloysius [Sarah GRIFFIN] passed away on Sunday, April 28th at about 6:15 pm. As you probably know, she had not been well for some time, and her condition has been deteriorating since Christmas Eve when she had to go to hospital for blood transfusions - these only gave her temporary relief. After coming out of hospital she came to the McAuley Home which is only a few hundred yards from the convent. She had to go to hospital on two more occasions when her blood count fell. The last transfusions she got (after Easter) did her no good at all, the doctor told her he could do no more for her, as her bone marrow was infected - I suppose she had developed leukemia - she only lived three weeks after that. She suffered intensely especially from a sore throat and dreadful thirst. Her more serious pain was kept at bay by medication. Juliana and Helen (LYONS) CARROLL were rocks of strength to her and to me. She died a very happy death surrounded by her sisters who prayed and sang hymns and Juliana and I held my dear one at the end.
Her Requiem Mass was very inspiring, there were 18 priests at the Altar, her nieces, grandniece (Niamh O'DRISCOLL [daughter of Cecilia (GRIFFIN) O'DRISCOLL]) and her grandnephews participated in the liturgy.
I miss her terribly, Gene she always was there for me, and she helped me every way she could, and I loved her dearly. She was 81 years on March 21st. All the family are very, very lonely.
